Description:

Harkers is a handsome historic pub right on St Helen’s Square, serving proper pub food, cask ales, gin, cocktails and city-centre people-watching from one of York’s best-positioned corners. Big building, classic pub feel, and a location so central it basically deserves its own postcode.

Good for:

Cask ales, pub lunches, after-work drinks, casual dinners, Sunday roasts, city-centre meet-ups, sports, dog-friendly stops and visitors who want a proper York pub without wandering down seven medieval side streets first.

Nearby:

Bettys Café Tea Rooms, York Mansion House, Stonegate, Coney Street, York Minster, Museum Gardens, The Shambles.

Make a Day of It:

Start with a wander around York Minster and Stonegate, drift into St Helen’s Square for a photo or two, then settle into Harkers for food, drinks and a front-row seat to York doing its thing. Afterwards, you’re perfectly placed for The Shambles, Museum Gardens or a cheeky Bettys window-shop if the queue looks less terrifying than usual.

The Tidy Take:

Harkers is a strong York all-rounder: historic building, proper pub comfort, central location and enough going on around it to make it an easy win for locals and visitors. It’s the kind of place that works for lunch, drinks, pre-gig fuel or “we’ll just have one” — famous last words, obviously.
