Description:
The Basement is an intimate 100-capacity performance space beneath City Screen Picturehouse, hosting live music, stand-up comedy, spoken word, theatre and creative community events. Regular fixtures include comedy nights, science talks and showcases for York’s artists and performers. It also has its own bar, meaning nobody needs to climb back to street level when a pint and another act are calling.

Good for:
Live music · stand-up comedy · spoken word · fringe theatre · science talks · local artists · grassroots performances · intimate gigs · creative events · private hire

Nearby:
Coney Street · River Ouse · Ouse Bridge · St Helen’s Square · Stonegate · York Minster · Museum Gardens · The Shambles

Make a Day of It:
Browse Coney Street, wander through nearby Museum Gardens and stop for food or a riverside drink at City Screen before heading downstairs for the evening’s performance.

The Tidy Take:
The Basement is one of those small venues that keeps York’s cultural calendar interesting. It is intimate, varied and just underground enough to make every comedy set, gig or spoken-word evening feel like something the rest of the city has not discovered yet.
