Description:
The Perky Peacock is a family-run café and bar hidden inside Barker Tower, a 14th-century riverside building beneath Lendal Bridge. The menu covers freshly made coffee, proper hot chocolate, breakfast rolls, sandwiches, warm bakes and cakes, with wines and cocktails available when coffee alone will not quite do. Choose the snug historic interior or grab a seat outside beside the River Ouse.
Good for:
Fresh coffee · breakfast rolls · bacon sandwiches · cakes · hot chocolate · light lunches · cocktails · riverside seating · takeaway · historic surroundings
Nearby:
Lendal Bridge · River Ouse · York city walls · Museum Gardens · Yorkshire Museum · York railway station · York Art Gallery · York Minster
Make a Day of It:
Begin with a riverside stroll or a circuit of the nearby city walls, then descend beneath Lendal Bridge for coffee and a bacon sandwich inside Barker Tower. Cross the river towards Museum Gardens afterwards, although the outdoor seats may tempt you into ordering cake and postponing all further historical enrichment.
The Tidy Take:
The Perky Peacock is proof that excellent cafés can fit into extremely old and slightly improbable places. It is cosy, characterful and perched right beside the river, with good coffee upstairs and enough medieval atmosphere downstairs to make a bacon sandwich feel like a historic event.
