Description:
The Punch Bowl is a traditional Nicholson’s pub with centuries of history, plenty of character and a reputation for cask ale and hearty British food. Its menu majors on hand-crafted pies alongside fish and chips, pub classics, sandwiches and Sunday roasts, backed by whisky, gin, wine and cocktails. The building has survived two major fires, carries stories of political drinking and is said to have a few ghosts lingering around the fireplaces.
Good for:
Cask ale · traditional pies · British pub food · Sunday lunch · whisky · historic interiors · relaxed meals · pre-theatre drinks · family dining · possible ghost sightings
Nearby:
Stonegate · York Minster · Barley Hall · St Helen’s Square · Mansion House · York Theatre Royal · Little Stonegate · Museum Gardens
Make a Day of It:
Visit York Minster, explore Barley Hall and browse the shops along Stonegate before stopping at The Punch Bowl for a cask ale and one of its substantial pies. Continue towards St Helen’s Square afterwards, unless a comfortable fireside seat and rumours of resident ghosts convince you to stay for another round.
The Tidy Take:
The Punch Bowl delivers the full historic York pub package: old rooms, proper ale, generous pies and at least a sporting chance of something supernatural. It is warm, central and reliably comforting. Order the steak and ale pie, then let the ghosts argue over who gets the last chip.
